2 Kinds of Snowboard Bindings
Characteristics of the 2 snowboard bindings - and how to decide which one's for YOU
Snowboard bindings are no longer a simple addition to a boarder's gear. First of all, there are two completely different kinds of snowboard bindings available, and although there are pros and cons to each type, it basically comes down to a matter of personal preference.
1. Strap-in bindings.
The way these snowboard bindings work is that you put the toe of your snowboard boot into the front binding, and strap it up; then you step down on your heel into the back of the binding and strap it up. Voila, you are attached to your board and ready to go!
2. Step-in bindings.
Step-in snowboard bindings work just like they sound. The toe part still gets strapped in, but when you put weight down on your heel, a simple 'click' locks your boot in to the bindings.
Making the Choice
You might automatically think that step-in snowboard bindings are THE way to go -- after all, when you step out of the chairlift, for example, the minute you put weight on your heel, you're set -- no MORE bending down! BUT ... convenience isn't the only thing to consider when it comes to snowboard bindings.
For one thing, the boots you use need to match the bindings -- and lots of boots simply don't work as well with step-ins. Also, lots of riders report that the strap-in bindings still have a better 'feel' and fit, AND you can use almost any boot with any strap-in binding, so there is a greater range of choices available.
Finally, strap-in snowboard bindings are cheaper -- and who isn't interested in THAT?
You might want to check out both types of snowboard bindings very thoroughly, and when you are shopping, ask the opinions of the sales professionals. Try different types on in the store, and see how they feel to YOU. In the final analysis, it really does come down to your personal choice -- which snowboard bindings will work for YOU?
