Before You Snowboard: Four Things You Need to Do

Four things to know -- or DO -- BEFORE you go snowboarding

If you snowboard, I can bet that the minute the snow starts falling, you can hardly WAIT to get out on the slopes with your snowboard!

I know this impatience VERY well, but I also know how that impatience can land you in a heap of trouble if you don't look after the details! It's really important that you take your time to do a few things first -- before you ever step into your board.

Your Snowboarding To-Do List

1. Make sure you have all the proper snowboard equipment and accessories, and that everything has been properly maintained and is in good working order. Correctly adjusted bindings, good sunglasses and a wind-proof coat are not luxuries ... they're essential.

2. Get in shape. If you've never been on a snowboard before, or if this is your first time to snowboard this season, then you may fall -- lots -- and if you're physically fit, you'll fare better! It's also important to do some warm-ups just before you strap on your board, too -- that'll loosen up your muscles a bit.

3. Plan to dress in layers. Depending on the terrain you're going to be snowboarding on, the weather can change drastically, even from the top of the hill to the bottom. Three layers is not unreasonable, but keep warmth, moisture management, and clothing weight in mind as you plan. And don't forget a snowboard hat and gloves or mittens!

4. Protection from the sun is more important than ever when you snowboard. The sun is stronger at higher altitudes, and keep in mind that it reflects constantly off of pure white snow. Don't snowboard with anything less than sunglasses and/or goggles, and a good sunscreen.

5. Do a final check of everything on the list on the morning you plan to snowboard -- and then PRAY FOR SNOW!
