Beginner Snowboarding: 5 Steps to Start

Beginner snowboarding in 5 easy steps

Beginner snowboarding.... we all have to start somewhere, right? Beginner snowboarding isn't as hard as you might have imagined, either --

There's just five basic steps to get started:

1. Figure out your beginner snowboarding stance. No, it doesn't matter whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, I've met great snowboarders who are both (and neither!), but you DO need to decide how to put your best foot forward -- literally. Have someone you trust (trust me on this) give you a little push from behind WITHOUT your snowboard on.

Which foot went forward first? If it was your left, you're a 'regular' snowboarder; if it was the right foot, you're a 'goofy' snowboarder. Don't take it personally, just know that that's your most comfortable stance, and go with it!

2. For beginner snowboarding, rent the equipment you'll need for your first couple of times out, as opposed to buying it. You have no idea what your personal preferences are, because you haven't developed them yet, so why spend a lot of money on stuff you might dislike in a month?

3. Sign up for beginner snowboarding lessons! Unless you have a friend who is a pro and has lots of time (and patience!) to teach you one-on-one, it's not worth trying to figure it out for yourself. I see lots of folks 'hanging out' at the hill, just watching other snowboarders to try to imitate what they're doing.

Why stand around on the hill, when you could be boarding DOWN it? Get an instructor, and you'll be beginner snowboarding in no time at all!

4. When you are beginner snowboarding, it's important to think safety. Whether that means finding a buddy to go with or making sure you have your bindings done up just right, be prepared to put safety first at all times.

5. Get in shape. Yes, beginner snowboarding requires a basic level of over-all fitness -- but don't worry, it's not all that hard to achieve if you're reasonably healthy, regardless of your age.

Consult with a local trainer or fitness expert to determine the right mix of aerobics, weight training and stretching that's just right for you.

Beginner snowboarding is no different than trying anything else for the first time -- be patient with yourself. Oh, and tip #6 is this.... have FUN!
