Characteristics of Kids Snowboards
... and how to choose the right one for YOUR kids
Kids snowboards definitely have to suit the kids -- unlike adults, kids are impressed by stuff like graphics (I mean, "if SpiderMan can snowboard, why can't I?") and the coolness factor.
But kids snowboards have to be more than just 'cute,' and thank goodness kids snowboard manufacturers are hep to that -- why wouldn't they want to get kids stoked about riding while they're young? Nothing like trying to claim a customer for life! :)
Chosing the right kid's snowboard
Kids snowboards need to be shorter, narrower and softer in order for them, as beginners, to get the best newbie experience. Kids snowboards are also generally constructed to be more light-weight and flexible than adult boards, so they'll learn easier -- and yet still be durable. Most parents know how hard kids are on their stuff!
Figuring out the correct length for kids snowboards is a bit tricky, and has a bit to do with their ability, and agility. Kids snowboards start as short as 100cm long (just a hair longer than 3 feet); when holding the board with its end on the ground, the top should come up to between the child's collar bone and chin.
Longer kids snowboards might be suitable for a quick learner, an adolescent who will soon be a teen, or a child who is particularly agile and will catch on really quickly.
Talk to knowledgeable sales clerks when you go shopping for kids snowboards, and if at all possible, take your child or children with you. They'll need to try on a few boards (with boots and bindings!) to try to get a 'feel' for what kids snowboards will work for them.
Have fun shopping for kids snowboards!
