How to Shop for Snowboard Boots

The 4 Characteristics of Good Snowboard Boots

Snowboard boots come in two major types: those that fit into step-in bindings and those that fit into strap-in bindings. So, of course, deciding what kind of bindings you'll use is really the first step in determining what snowboard boots you'll buy.

Once you've made that decision, the next consideration is that your snowboard boots need to fit you comfortably, yet still be able to perform well.

There are four characteristics of snowboard boots that you'll need to know before you buy:

1. Snowboard boots are meant to fit snugly, but not too snugly, so you should shop for them when your feet may already be a bit swollen -- either from riding, physical exercise, or just because it's late in the day.

2. Snowboard boots should fit you for minimum 'heel lift.' When you try on a pair that seems to be right for you, wear them around the shop for ten minutes, making sure that when you bend at the knees, with your feet flat on the floor, your heel feels securely in place, and grounded.

3. Snowboard boots are either 'soft' or 'hard' and which one you choose will depend on how you ride, and how experienced you are - a freerider needs a different kind of boot than a racer, and a novice boarder probably needs a more flexible boot than a pro. Again, check with the professionals to determine which boot is best for you.

4. Snowboard boots need to have the best of shock absorption, foot support, stability, and wear-ability, but it's also okay to check out snowboard boots for STYLE, too: the right combination of all the practical stuff along with great colors and curvy lines is going to make you STOKED for riding!
