Should You or Shouldn't You Wear a Snowboard Helmet?

The three things to consider about wearing a snowboard helmet

Wearing a snowboard helmet is a very smart thing to do, in my opinion. Don't you want to live a long time so you can snowboard more? I sure do, so I always wear a snowboard helmet!

Snowboard helmets are becoming more popular with all riders, and as a result, manufacturers are working hard to bring us all a snowboard helmet that is functional and inexpensive, yet stylish.

There are several things to consider about wearing a snowboard helmet:

1. First of all, a snowboard helmet costs about the equivalent of a couple of day passes, and could save your life -- especially if you a beginner, venture off the worn trails, or do a lot of snowboard racing.

2. Some manufacturers are coming out with snowboard helmet lines that can be used for more than just snowboarding -- for example, rock climbing or skating. A snowboard helmet like this is particulary practical if you are in to other sports.

3. When you are ready to buy a snowboard helmet, make sure it has a stamped rating on it that says "CE," "ASTM" or "Snell RS-98" -- no other certifications are approved for sale at this time.

4. Look for a snowboard helmet that is as light as possible while still being durable -- and cool-looking, too!

5. A snowboard helmet should be fitted by measuring the circumference of your head, with your hair out of the way, JUST above your eyebrows. Not all helmets fit the same -- every manufacturer has a different idea of head shapes, so make sure your snowboard helmet is approved AND comfortable, no matter what. Make sure you try on your snowboard helmet WITH your goggles.

6. A properly-fitted snowboard helmet should not move when you shake your head.

Good luck finding the perfect snowboard helmet for you!
