Snowboard Equipment: What You Need - and What You Don't Need

How to choose the right snowboard equipment

The list of snowboard equipment that you need is actually pretty basic, and then there are some accessories that are fairly critical, as well.

Choosing the RIGHT snowboard equipment ISN'T necessarily basic, though -- there is a lot of competition out there, and wading through the minefield of what you need and what you don't need isn't always easy.

Do Your Snowboarding Equipment Research!

You'll have an easier time of picking the right snowboard equipment for YOU if you first read whatever you can about it (so that you understand the PROPERTIES of the equipment you'll be looking for), talk to knowledgeable friends and family -- that is, if they are experienced riders -- take your budget into consideration, and finally, listen to the wisdom of experienced sales staff in the stores wherever you'll shop.

In the final analysis, you might buy snowboard equipment based on personal preference or a 'gut feeling,' but at least you'll be well-educated about snowboard equipment!

Here's what you need:

1. The BOARD itself. Depending on your age, weight, skill level, and whether you are male or female, there are literally hundreds of choices of boards -- and then many of them can be further customized after purchase, too.

2. The boots should be the next thing on your shopping list of snowboard equipment; to learn more about snowboard boots, check out this page ... (link to snowboard boots page)

3. The bindings. There are two very different kinds of snowboard bindings, and the decision about which ones are right for you should not be taken lightly, because neither kind comes cheap! For more discussion about snowboard bindings to help you make your choice, see snowboard bindings page.

4. The basic snowboard equipment clothing you'll need includes appropriate underwear (no, your silk bikini briefs won't cut it on the hill!) :), and then at least two other outer layers, including a warm, wind- and water-proof jacket. Don't forget to layer the lower half of your body, too, not just your torso.

5. The snowboard equipment accessories -- hat, gloves, socks -- should be chosen with as much care as you've chosen your board, boots and bindings, because they could just as easily safe you a great deal of discomfort -- or even save your life!

6. Other accessories -- sunglasses, sunscreen. Finally, sun protection products are an essential on the list of snowboard equipment to acquire. Don't skimp on it!
